The Etymology of Arfe. Said like barf without the b.

Coined by Puerto Rican artist Franscisco Rivera Rosa in roughly 1995. He continues to make a living painting and sculpting with coffee. He called this technique  Arfe which is the combination of the Spanish words for art and coffee.  Arte and ca. Thus, Arfe.

Talented husband-wife duo Andrew Saur and Angel Sarkela-Saur, artists of the above art piece have an extensive gallery here.

Arfe is what linguists refer to as a portmanteau.  Said like port – man –to.  It’s a word blended of 2+ words or morphemes and their meanings.  A morpheme is the smallest component of a word holding semantic meaning. However, that doesn’t mean all morphemes stand alone to form the concept of a word.  We are getting in too deep. Story for another time.

New York Times article “About New York; Double Mocha with a Shot of Watercolor” go on to describe Mr. Rosa as “embracing a self-referential realism” in naming.
